REPORT ON VISIT TO LUHIMBA OCTOBER 2005

JAMBO!

Six Luhimba Project volunteers have recently returned from another successful and very enjoyable visit to the village. For Pete Clark, Laura Wedmore and me, this was our second visit this year, and Jan Harris, Jayne Richards and James Richards experienced a taste of Luhimba life for the first time.

This time I asked the Headteachers of the secondary and 3 primary schools, the village medical officer (George Pallangyo)and the Secretary of the Small Business Committee (Joseph Simsokwe) to write reports for you so that you can see what is happening from their points of view.

We have had a crate of Tanzanian Crafts sent over and plan to hold some sales in local Church/ Village Halls, with all the proceeds going back to the village. Please keep a look out in the Weston Mercury for details.

Best wishes and thank you all so very much for your on-going support.
Paul

LUHIMBA DISPENSARY MANAGEMENT

On behalf of the management I would like to express our great appreciation and gratitude to all those who directly or otherwise contributed to the efforts resulting to construction of Luhimba Dispensary (Mrs Angela Carey's Dispensary). It is not possible to mention all those who did the brilliant job but I would like to mention Mr Michael who was the founder of the village and up to now the village is getting many help due to that. Also it is a great sin to forget Mr Paul Temple - a Co-ordinator who comes yearly to see the problems of Luhimba people and try to solve them -not forgetting the team members who come together for the same issue may God bless them all.

As a dispensary in Charge since it was opened in 1998 there is a great change in conducting health
services in our village due to your great help and our government, we are able to conduct the following
activities in our dispensary:-

Giving health
Attending out-patient cases, treating, admissions and referring them if necessary '
Running primary eye care courses ie treating, advising and referring complicated diagnosed cases
NB A great thanks to all who raise funding to me to get more knowledge in eye care services. I am also dealing with trachoma control in our area

Conducting maternal and child services including family planning
Conducting deliveries
Screening of risk, anti-natal cases, treating and referring others in time.

Due to limited working places, we are not able to conduct other services like laboratory and others, but it is my great hope that due to your great help after completion of our next building, which will be a ward and other offices we will be able to conduct all that and provide better and quality services.

Finally, I wish to express our gratitude to your kind people that provides financial and material support without whom the completion of the building and provision of materials will not be possible and other health activities. To all these and many more, my sincere thanks. . .
George Pallangyo

LUHIMBA VILLAGE COUNCIL
A Progressive Report of the Small Business Scheme.

1 INTRODUCTION
The small business scheme is among the flourishing projects supported by Luhimba project. Other projects include Nguluma Secondary School, Heifer project, Mrs Angela Carey Dispensary, and three Luhimba primary schools ie Luhimba pre-school, Likarangilo and Ngembambili Primary School.

2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE SCHEME
The idea of having this scheme started in October 2003 by our lovely sister, Helen Sweet. She 'sold' this idea to the villagers and everybody received it as a good news for the solution to our poverty. The scheme started in April 2004 by Tsh 500,000/~. This money was loaned to five groups as a trial. The scheme is led by six people as follows:-

Mr Jumanne Lahi           Carpenter               Chairman
Mr Mathias Milanzi        Business Man         Vice-Chairman
Mr Joseph Simsokwe   Agriculture Officer   Secretary
Ms Happy Ntim            Business Woman     Treasurer
Mrs Zainabu Mbawala   A farmer                 Member
Mr Joseph Tago            A Builder               Member

3 ACHIEVEMENT
Since April 2004, the scheme has improved the life of the groups tremendously. Different business have been started, including bean production, rice production and tomato production. Other businesses are pig and chicken keeping and small shops and a tea room.

4 PROBLEMS
Some of the constraints facing the scheme is that some people do not understand well the aim of the scheme. They think paying back the loan is enough to them. But the real goal of the scheme is to support people having better life - to make a step forward in the poverty alleviation. Therefore the committee is working hard to educate people on this.

Some people also are not honest enough. They don't work hard after getting the loan. In order to safeguard the loan, the committee has designed a contract. This contract has been approved by the District Lawyer.

5 CONCLUSION
We thank you again for your support to our village. We promise you that we utilise this support in a good way. We appreciate it very much.

Yours sincerely
Joseph Simsokwe
Loan Committee Secretary

LIKARANGILO PRIMARY SCHOOL
This school started in 1994 and is situated 28km North of Songea District. It started with two classrooms, with 95 pupils. Today the school has ten class rooms, four teachers' offices, 3 teachers' houses, and with 676 pupils - 322 are girls and 354 Are boys. At present the school has 15 teachers.

Academically the school is doing fine. Pupils perform well in mock and national exams. In 2003 the school won third position in our Songea rural district. Songea rural district has 150 primary schools. In the national exams that followed (2004) this school won third postion again. In this year, 2005 our target is to win first or second position. The success is subject to the hard working of our teachers.

Our school has fortunately got a sponsor from the UK (Mr Paul Temple). He has so far offered our school with the following requirements:- solar panel, 4 sewing machines, 2 radios. He financed a well construction and bought a school brass band.

Our school is facing problems too. We are short of 4 class rooms, a room for a library, science room and 12 teacher houses. Pupils of this school lack medical care because there is no dispensary in this village.

We are at present putting efforts to solve these problems. First we educate the villagers and parents to lay bricks for the construction of the buildings - ie. class room, teacher houses, dispensary, etc. We secondly look for aid from our District Council, central government and other stake holders.

The out-come of our efforts are now vivid. Parents have laid bricks and are construction one teacher house.

We are grateful to parents, District Council, central government and other stake holders - especially Mr Paul Temple for their support.

Prepared by the Headteacher and approved by the School Board.
